A 44-year-old man was arrested by the Fugitive Task Force on Wednesday and charged in connection to historical child sex offences that allegedly occurred in the Greater Darwin area in 2008, NT Police said on Friday.

The female victim was aged between 13 and 16 at the time of the alleged offences, while the man was 26-years-old at the time, police said.

Police said in a statement on Friday that the Katherine Criminal Investigation Branch started an investigation into the matter last month, after the alleged offending was reported to the NT Police.

The man was arrested on Wednesday and charged with multiple offences, including sexual intercourse or gross indecency with a child under 16; attempts to procure a child under 16; indecent dealing with a child under 16; and indecent aggravated assault.

The man was bailed and will appear in the Darwin Local Court on June 3.

“Members of the public who have any information about people involved in child abuse and exploitation are urged to call police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,” police said in the statement.
