A 52-year-old man who allegedly smashed his head against a cell wall at the Palmerston Watch House causing a laceration has been charged for allegedly biting and kicking officers who attended to him, NT Police said.

The man was brought to the Watch House around 8:20am Thursday after being cleared for custody by Royal Darwin Hospital where he was treated for undisclosed issues.

Police allege the man then struck his own head on the cell wall, causing a laceration. It was then, police said, that he bit one officer and kicked another who had come into the cell.

He was then taken back to hospital for treatment of the self-inflicted head injury.

He was later charged with three counts of assaulting police and one count of disorderly behaviour in a police station. He was refused bail and will appear in court on those charges on July 14, police said.

One male officer was treated for a hand injury and “provided medication” and a female officer suffered “minor pain and discomfort”, police said.

“Our police officers go to work to serve and protect the community every day. When we have cause to interact with people and bring them into the Watch House it is not acceptable that they become punching bags,” said Superintendent Peter Malley.

“We will maintain our professionalism, charge these people and bring them before the courts.”
