The 52-year-old man who sustained serious burns in the suspected Parap gas explosion last Wednesday has passed away, NT Police confirmed.
The man was admitted to the Royal Darwin Hospital where he remained in critical condition following the explosion in his apartment in Gregory Street at around 2:30am on September 16.
It’s understood he died on Friday, but police did not put out a statement until late Monday afternoon.
Emergency services were able to attend the site of the explosion on Gregory Street 15 minutes after receiving reports from the neighborhood.
The room was found “extensively damaged”, police said at the time. Reports from the scene indicated personal belongings were seen hanging off trees at the site.
The man’s neighbour, Eric Tongo, told the ABC that he suspected it was a gas bottle that exploded and wished his neighbour well.
“I could smell gas. There was no fire or anything,” Mr Tongo said, adding that the explosion was so strong it cracked his wall.
“I did see the man get out, he didn’t look very well. I just can’t believe he’s alive,” he said.
“I just hope this fella is alright, I believe he may be in intensive care so I really hope he ends up okay.”
NT Police said a report will be prepared for the coroner. Investigations into the incident are still ongoing.
Anyone with information on the explosion is urged to contact police at 131 444 quoting reference number 9423644.
