A man was arrested for allegedly bashing a family member at an unspecified Central Australian community on Sunday night, leaving the victim with serious head injuries, while a vehicle was also allegedly driven through a fence and another person was brandishing a firearm at the same location, NT Police said.

Police director of communications Mark Wilton said in a statement that about 11pm Sunday, police received multiple reports of a man being assaulted by another man in a domestic violence attack.

“The victim had allegedly been seriously injured and was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries to his head at a local medical clinic,” Mr Wilton said.

“A vehicle had also allegedly been driven through a fence and a firearm had allegedly been produced. The firearm was not discharged.”

Mr Wilton said the gun was not surrendered to police until Monday “as a result of proactive community engagement by local sworn and unsworn officers” but there was no mention of charges to do with the gun.

Police did not say where the incidents happened, but said all the people involved were believed to be known to each, and the alleged attacker was arrested and remanded in custody to appear in Alice Springs Local Court on Tuesday.

There was no mention of what he had been charged with.

If you or someone you know are experiencing difficulties due to domestic violence, support services are available, including, but not limited to, 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732) or Lifeline 131 114.
