A 45-year-old man from an unspecified “Daly River Region community” has handed himself into police in connection to a hit-and-run in Parap on Friday morning that left an unregistered car overturned and a cyclist seriously injured, NT Police said.
The incident occurred around 5am at the intersection of the Stuart Highway and Wollner Road.
Police said the man, who they allege was driving at the time, fled the scene on foot while the cyclist was taken to hospital in a serious condition where he continues to receive treatment.
The man, who turned himself in on Monday, is facing eight charges, including hit and run causing serous harm, careless driving, not assisting after a crash, failing to report a crash, as well as driving an insured and unregistered vehicle and driving while unlicensed.
He was later bailed.
Police are also seeking anyone who witnessed the crash to contact them on 131 444, including a woman who was at the scene at the time of crash who police described as “Caucasian in appearance, with shoulder-length brown hair, and wearing a white Adidas shirt, dark-coloured long pants and thongs”.
The 45-year-old man is scheduled to appear in Wadeye Local Court on February 6.
“Every driver involved in a crash is required by law to stop, render assistance to others, and then contact police,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner.
“If you are unwilling to stop after being involved in a crash, then don’t drive in the Northern Territory.”
