A Wadeye man has been charged with taking part in a riot and going armed in public while part of a mob of 100 people armed with rocks and improvised weapons, forcing officers once again to disperse a violent crowd with chemicals, NT Police have said.

Media manager Rob Cross said the 29-year-old man was arrested during the “disturbance” on Tuesday evening where about 100 people had armed themselves with rocks and improvised weapons.

He said one man was taken to the local clinic with a foot injury and OC spray was used to disperse the crowd.

Mr Cross said the arrested man has been remanded to appear in court at a later date.

He did not say why only one person was arrested amongst a group of 100 people armed with rocks and improvised weapons.

Police are continuing to investigate a fight involving 300 people on an oval in the community on Sunday night, he said.

Senior Sergeant Bradley Fox said in a statement on Monday afternoon at about 5pm there were about 300 people gathered on the oval, fighting using blunt and edged weapons. He did not detail what weapons were allegedly used.

He said one 26-year-old man was taken to the local clinic with an arm injury, and rocks were thrown at police vehicles.

It follows on from fighting in March and April which once source described as “absolute mayhem”. NT Police made public that a man had been killed after being speared in the head, while other sources said health clinic staff were seriously injured, police officers were told not to leave the station compound, and 37 houses were set on fire, the results of ongoing violence not made public by NT Police or the Gunner Government.
