A 35-year-old man has been arrested over the alleged sexual assault of a woman in Palmerston overnight after he was tracked through the CBD using CCTV, NT Police said.
Police director of communications Mark Wilton said just after 10.30pm on Sunday, members of the public contacted police after a 47-year-old woman approached them in a car park in the Palmerston CBD and reported she had been assaulted.
“The woman had visible injuries,” Mr Wilton said.
“CCTV operators identified and tracked the alleged offender as he moved through the area, providing police with real-time information on his location.”
Mr Wilton said the man was quickly arrested and taken to the Palmerston Watch House.
“Police would like to acknowledge and thank the members of the public who assisted the woman and immediately contacted police,” Mr Wilton said.
“Their actions, together with the work of CCTV operators and responding officers, enabled police to quickly locate and arrest the alleged offender.”
Investigations remain ongoing.
