Darwin Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis has cancelled his VIP-only unveiling of the controversial Cyclone Tracy memorial sculpture, claiming the Prime Minister had a “bad personal issue” to deal with and could not attend, then attempting to justify keeping the $300,000 in government funding for the memorial by bizarrely claiming that while the sculpture is not a memorial, giving the money back “would be a slap in the face” to Cyclone Tracy survivors who helped select the design.
The Lord Mayor was on Katie Woolf’s Mix 104.9 radio program on Thursday when he was asked about the event and whether he would return the Federal Government’s money because of his repeated claims the Coriolis sculpture created by New Zealand artist Phil Price is not a Cyclone Tracy memorial in the face of overwhelming evidence that it is.

Is it just me? It seems that bureaucrats, politicians, and people who were not in Darwin for Tracy, have dominated planning of the celebration. Thanks to Vatskalis, I won’t get to meet fellow survivors after all, only a vast army of hangers-on. I certainly won’t be attending that farce. But I can certainly understand why Kon and Albo will not be there. Peer rejection is always hard to wear.
