Long overdue underground power work to finally start in northern suburbs: Govt

The NT Government has announced the northern suburbs of Nakara, Wagaman, and Larrakeyah will be the first to have their high voltage overhead power lines undergrounded as part of the government’s long delayed underground power network project that was first announced in 2018, following the devastation of Cyclone Marcus.

The $60 million underground power network was not budgeted for until 2022, more than four years after the cyclone brought down more than 500 power lines, leaving at least 28,500 individuals without power. The $60 million is only expected to cover the first stage along main roads, with the entire three-stage project expected to take to the end of the decade and cost in excess of $200 million at the last estimate.
