Dear Editor,
In am writing with regard to Police Commissioner Michael Murphy’s recent apology to Indigenous Territorians.
I am a retired member of the Northern Territory Police, after serving 38-years.
I am truly offended by his apology, and take it as an insult to all who have served.
So, I thought I would pen a letter of response.
Please excuse the grammar as I have had a stroke.
I wanted to say to Commissioner Murphy that I was glad he apologised to our Indigenous brothers and sisters.
But I too, would like to say I’m sorry for a few things.
I am sorry for having a shotgun pointed in my face whilst attending a domestic off-duty.
For having my windscreen smashed with a lump of concrete, and being a human punching bag while I saved a woman from being beaten by her husband.
For being punched in the face by a male holding a full bottle of Bundaberg rum he had just stolen.
For nearly being stabbed in the back by a prisoner.
For picking up the pieces of people who had just died.
But hey, I was being paid.
I’m sure every job has its dangers, such as being a shop assistant, checkout operator, or a store manager, just to name a few.
I want to tell him that is apology shows that he is not proud of the Northern Territory police force, or its members past, present, and emerging, and it was a insult to our retired members.
Perhaps you should apologise to me Mr Murphy.
Just a thought
Bob Harrison, Toorbul, Queensland.
