The Wilderness Society has appointed former Environment Centre NT director Kirsty Howey as its new chief executive officer, starting August 31.
Dr Howey is well known for her leadership in opposing fossil fuel expansion and deforestation and highlighting the importance of First Nations’ rights in environmental policy during her more than six years with the ECNT. The Wilderness Society said her expertise will help guide the organisation in addressing the challenges of environmental conservation in Australia.
“The Wilderness Society has spent 50 years fighting for Australia’s wild places, and the next 50 will demand the same courage and resolve. Kirsty Howey is exactly the leader we need for that fight,” Wilderness Society Board Convenor Amanda Branley said in a statement.
“I’m delighted to welcome her as our new CEO and look forward to the impact she will make.”
It was reported she will be based in Darwin.
Dr Howey is known for her work with ECNT where she spearheaded campaigns opposing the extensive growth of fossil fuel projects, deforestation, and the degradation of Australia’s rivers and ecosystems.
“I’m truly honoured to help steward one of Australia’s most iconic and important environmental organisations at such a pivotal moment for nature,” Dr Howey said.
“Australia has the most spectacular and unique natural landscapes on Earth, but they’re at risk like never before.
“I’ll bring to this role courage and a deep commitment to working alongside grass-roots communities, members, supporters and staff to build a movement powerful enough to protect the places we cherish.”
Before joining the ECNT she did her PhD thesis at the University of Sydney investigating the intersection of Indigenous institutions, the environment, the state, and development in northern Australia. She has a Bachelor of Arts/Laws from ANU and a Master of Laws from the University of British Columbia.
