Flickerfest 2023, Australia’s only Oscar-qualifying and BAFTA-recognised short film festival, will celebrate the best short films from around the world and here at home at Darwin’s iconic outdoor Deckchair Cinema, this Saturday, July 22.
This year, Flickerfest will present A-list short film programmes recognised amongst the best in the world with films handpicked from the festival’s record 3,200 entries.
Flickerfest will be screening two programs, Best of Australian Shorts, with NT shorts in the mix at 7 pm, and Shorts Laughs Comedy at 9 pm.
The Best of Australian Shorts shines a spotlight on the incredible short film talent that exists in the emerging Australian industry, with nine Australian stories honouring unique identity and culture.
Local NT films will also star on the big screen with two NT shorts, ‘The Wardrobe’ by local writer/director Kate Wyvill and producer Sarah Price – a tale about a harassed mother who finds a unique way of taking revenge.
Another local film ‘Kukaputju (The Hunter)’ by the Tjanpi Desert Weavers, cultural director Yanyangkari Roma Butler and animator Jonathon Daw. The story is told in the language of Pitjantjatjara, as an Aṉangu woman gives an expressive account of a day hunting in the bush.
Other highlights include the delightfully quirky French comedy romance, ‘Born to Cry’, ‘The Diamond’, and ‘An Ostrich Told Me The World Is Fake And I Think I Believe It’.
Organisers say they have gone to great lengths to curate the 2023 National Tour to bring the best of Australian and the world’s short film excellence, handpicked from Flickerfest’s Australian and International competitions in Bondi.
It’s expected to be a festive atmosphere with friends and family as Flickerfest celebrates Australian stories and talent on the big screen and introduces new storytellers to NT Audiences.
