Inpex reported an oil spill at its Ichthys facility on Darwin Harbour earlier this month, which was made public days after the Japanese gas giant admitted to under-reporting toxic emissions for years at the same facility, with calls for a public inquiry into the company’s failures.
The company acknowledged 36,000 litres of “heating medium fluid” spilled on October 12 while doing work on LNG Train 2, with heavy rain overnight impacting the plant’s stormwater system and allegedly causing some of the oil to be washed into Darwin Harbour and surrounding mangroves.
