An infant was taken to hospital in Alice Springs Sunday night after allegedly being assaulted by her 20-year-old mother in a remote MacDonnell Region community, NT Police said, while an investigation into the matter has been launched.

Police said in a statement they received reports from the local clinic staff about the incident around 11:45pm Sunday night.

It is alleged the woman assaulted the infant at a residence in the unnamed community. It was reported the injuries were caused by “blunt force” trauma.

The child was taken to Alice Springs Hospital and is currently in a “stable condition”, police said.

“The 20-year-old female has also been conveyed to Alice Springs Hospital for assessment,” police media director Mark Wilton said in a statement.

“Investigations into the incident are currently ongoing.”
