‘If Laksa House shuts down no one will talk about Darwin’: Amye Un’s dire warning

Failed independent candidate for Fong Lim and lord mayor aspirant Amye Un has put her Stuart Park Laksa House Warung Ibu on the market and says if she is forced to close down no one will talk about Darwin anymore.

Ms Un, who is originally from a farm in West Timor, said she had run the restaurant for 17 years but a lack of customers because of COVID-19 restrictions and a shrinking economy was destroying her business.

“I don’t have enough customers and the business has collapsed,” she said.

“The government has to do something because we don’t have enough in Darwin. The government is busy, busy, busy about other things like fracking, but not busy about the economy.

“The border is blocked and there is no reason to come here. I understand the Government has to protect people but businesses need to be happy too.

“It is very sad because I’ve built this business for 17 years and I now have to shut down.

“I am very famous all over Darwin, I have a cooking book with Pete Evans, if Laksa House shuts down no one will talk about Darwin.

“People come from all over the world looking for the Laksa House.

“I used to make $300-400 dollars a day, now I thank god if I can make $50 dollars.”

She is looking for someone to buy, but if the Government can “fix the economy and bring people to Darwin I will stay”.

“I would look after homeless people (if she was forced to close). My mission is to help people since I’m coming from Timor – it is time to give back and pay my respect to Australia.”

In a random post on Facebook from August 14, which could be a chilling warning to her political enemies, she wrote: I DON’T KNOW WHY JESUS ALWAYS TEACHING ME TO FORGIVENESS TO MY ENEMIES, BECAUSE THEY DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY DOING TO ME”.

We Need Green

Hello Darwin, we need green!

Posted by Laksa House (Warung Ibu Amye) on Monday, September 9, 2019

While long known for her laksas and oxtail soup, she became more well known and showed how powerful she can be, with her bonkers video from last September where she had a slogan of “Give us green” and waved a giant wooden spoon around, telling Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis he should use it to smack his people into action to make the median strip of the Stuart Hwy outside her warung green.

While Mr Vatskalis said it was not a council matter but one under the control of the NT Government’s Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, within a few days there were people out there planting plants.
On the back of the video she went one step further and said was considering running for lord mayor against Mr Vatskalis in 2021.

“If I became lord mayor I won’t sit my arse in the chair,” she said in a second video talking about being lord mayor.

“No nonsense or too much talking, just action. We need action.

She did run in the Darwin Council Lyons Ward by-election in February, launching her campaign on Facebook saying she wanted to go from “from cooking girl to politic(s)”.
She came fourth with 796 votes against winner Paul Arnold’s 1,854 votes.

Northern Territory director Caro Macdonald is making a short documentary called Give Us Green, Darling! about Ms Un, which was one of three winners of the Screen Australia and Al Jazeera English Witness pitching competition, held at the Australian International Documentary Conference in Melbourne in March.

  1. Always mystifies me that when it is obvious that government has caused the problem, people appeal to the government to fix it.
Uh, hello? Government does not know what they are doing otherwise there would be no problem to start with.
So expecting them to fix a problem is only asking for things to be made worse.
The problem is government itself, irrespective of who is running it, the left or the right.
As a society it is up to us to sort our problems and the biggest problem we face today is too much government interference and regulation of our lives.
Either we shrink government to a point where we hardly recognise it is there or we continue down the path of a full on Authoritarian form of governance.
