Darwin bar and nightclub Monsoons is hoping to roll a strike with patrons, filing an application to utilise another floor of its existing premises for a new bar area, including a four-lane bowling alley installed inside the club, its development application with the government shows.

An alterations and expansion proposal submitted by MasterPlan NT on behalf of Monsoons to the Department of Infrastructure, Planning, and Logistics reveals that the nightclub is seeking to renovate its first-floor level (it currently only uses the ground floor) to be used as a bar, which would include two full-size bowling lanes and two “reduced-size” lanes in the new proposed bar area that would also include booth seating.

Two lanes would be one either side of the bar area.

Under MasterPlan’s proposal, the alterations and additions to the existing building include enlarging the main area, approximately 453 sqm; using the concrete slab that is its first floor totalling around 529sqm; new entry doors of the existing bar, and new lighting installations, a new bar and restaurant, and a new curved awning at the entrance, among other alterations.

A lift is also proposed for use between the ground and first floor and highchair seating in the new area for 180 seats and “a bar that doubles as a shoe hire facility”.

If approved, the works would be internal only and increase the total area to 982 sqm, from the current 528 sqm.

Darwin currently only has one bowling alley at Kingpin in Eaton, after Planet Tenpin closed in Nightcliff in 2021.

Monsoons is owned by Australian Venue Co. The project proposal went on exhibition on January 30 and closed on February 3, with works expected to begin in a single stage once all permits are obtained.
