Telecommunications in Alice Springs have been disrupted numerous times by the theft of hundreds of metres of copper wire since April NT Police said, with the agency asking the public to help them catch the perpetrators.

Police director of communications Mark Wilton said thieves had targetted two telecommunications pits between Alice Springs Airport and the Gap.

He said there were hundreds of meters of copper wire stolen, which probably required a large vehicle, with police saying the wire was likely cut into smaller lengths for resale.

“Telecommunication services have been disrupted due to the thefts,” Mr Wilton said.

The Logistics and Infrastructure Department’s website warns copper thieves frequently targets service infrastructure such as roads and construction sites and the copper is often sold illegally on the black market.

Incidents of theft tend to happen at traffic lights or intersections, particularly in rural areas with lower traffic volumes.

The website says this type of theft can lead to significant disruptions in power supply, telecommunications, and road operations, posing severe risks to public safety.

Police are asking anyone with information to call them on 131 444 (quote reference number NTP2400112879), or make an anonymous report by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or make a report through the Crime Stoppers website.
