NT Police have identified the skeletal remains found near Lee Point Beach in September as a missing person who vanished without a trace more than 10 years ago.

Police said on Friday that the remains, including a skull and other bones, belonged to Michael Lui who was first reported missing in May 2011.

According to the missing persons register, Mr Lui was identified as a 44-year-old Aboriginal man and resident of Coconut Grove when he went missing. He was listed as 174cm tall, medium build, greying hair with several front teeth missing.

Police were concerned in 2011 when he went missing as he required medication for an undisclosed condition.

On Friday, police said in a statement that they were unable to identify a cause of death “but no suspicious circumstances have been identified”.

His family has been notified, police added.

In late September, police were called to Lee Point Beach after the discovery of the remains and established a crime scene that lasted for days as forensic experts “painstakingly” processed the scene and removed the bones for testing.

“There’s no indication of any trauma to the skull and there’s no indication of any trauma to any of the larger bones on our first look,” Detective Acting Superintendent Karl Day said at the time.

“They’ve now retrieved numerous human bones from that site, and they will be subject to ongoing forensic testing and analysis in order to time-stamp it and hopefully work towards identification.”

The remains were found in a heavily wooded area in bushland a large distance away from the car park at the beach on September 28.
