NT Police have arrested and charged a 51-year-old man with murder, following the death of another man in hospital earlier this week, in what police are calling a “horrendous act of domestic violence”.

The 54-year-old victim was originally assaulted last week in the Darwin CBD in the Tomaris Court flats residential complex on Smith Street and taken to hospital in a critical condition with serious head injuries on Friday, April 8.

He succumbed to the injuries on Wednesday.

Police said they were first alerted to the assault by a woman who had entered a nearby business to call for help.

Earlier this week, police said the man’s two flatmates were being sought as “persons of interest”.

The 51-year-old man was arrested on Thursday and charged with murder. He was remanded to appear in Darwin Local Court on April 19.

“This was a horrendous act of domestic violence and sadly the victim has lost their life as a result,” said Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Michael Budge in a statement. He did not explain the connection to the victim.

“If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic or family violence, please reach out for help. You can contact police at any time on 131 444 or in an emergency call 000.”
