NT Police arrested two men on Territory Day in separate incidents involving dangerous driving with unrestrained children in their vehicles, including one man who was allegedly more than four times over the legal blood alcohol limit with an infant in the back and another who had children hidden under a towel while allegedly speeding.

Police said a 38-year-old man was stopped for a random breath test in Darwin on Friday night, later returning a blood alcohol reading of 0.225. There was an unrestrained infant in the back seat between two adults.

He was charged with driving with a high-range blood alcohol content, providing false details, driving with an unrestrained child and driving while disqualified.

The other man, a 28-year-old, was allegedly speeding also on Friday night when police apprehended him and found two unrestrained children “in the rear of the vehicle, hidden in the footwell beneath a towel,” said Superintendent Peter Malley.

The man also had an outstanding warrant and was arrested and was to appear in court on Monday.

“This driver behaviour is disgraceful,” Supt Malley said.

“Children are our most precious assets, and to put their innocent lives at risk through this sort of reckless disregard for safety is beyond belief.”
