Darwin area organisations and schools can now register and apply for grants of up to $500 to create a float for the upcoming “A Very Darwin Christmas” pageant in Darwin City on November 18.

The pageant, a collaboration of the City of Darwin and the NT Government, will be followed by a variety of fun and family-friendly Christmas-themed activities throughout the city.

“Mark 18 November in your calendar! 2023 sees the return of Darwin’s Christmas Pageant, celebrating the magic of the Christmas season in the heart of our city,” Chief Minister Natasha Fyles said.

“Christmas in the Territory is unique, and this event showcases our vibrant community spirit – it’s incredibly heart-warming to see so many Territorians come together at this special time of year.”

Territory businesses are urged to be involved by sponsoring the unique and joyous event.

This year’s events include the opening of Santa’s Village, Christmas Carols by Candlelight, a family fun fair, fun rides, and a Christmas party.

More than 7,000 spectators attended last year’s inaugural event that saw a parade of 50 floats down the Esplanade and Knuckey Street that finished at Raintree Park, where participants were treated to live music and performances.

The event also provided Darwin’s hospitality sector with a boost as visitors and locals gathered and celebrated at pubs and restaurants.

Darwin Mayor Kon Vatskalis said the pageant is an opportunity for people to appreciate each other and bring some fun and joy to the city in a spirit of kindness.

“I can’t wait to see what the community creates to show us what ‘A very Darwin Christmas’ means for them. This is a great start to the Darwin festive season and I encourage community groups across Darwin to get involved, celebrate Christmas and start designing a float,” he said.
