The Finocchiaro Government is extending the life of three gas turbine electricity generators that supply Darwin and Katherine, but the government has refused to say if it will still meet its 2030 renewable energy target, while the Utilities Commission has said it cannot tell if the government’s plan is the appropriate solution, it has been reported.
The ABC reported that the Essential Services Minister Steve Edgington had said the 37-year-old gas turbine generators at the Channel Island Power Station that had been scheduled for decommissioning in 2027 would be retained to ensure “sufficient reliable capacity” to provide electricity for the homes of about 150,000 people who are supplied by the Darwin-Katherine grid.
