Government announces trial of courtesy bus service to homeless shelter

The Fyles Government has announced $1 million to be spent on a courtesy bus to drive homeless people to the Marrara crisis accommodation shelter, and for extending security patrols along the Darwin foreshore for 12 months.

Chief Minister Natasha Fyles said in a statement a tender would be awarded to a private company to run the courtesy bus in Darwin and Palmerston, taking people to the 450-bed Batten Rd, Marrara shelter, as a 12-month trial.

She said the foreshore security patrols would be extended for another 12 months. The foreshore security patrols do not seem to have been previously publicly announced based on media reporting and a search of the NT government media release archives.

The Chief Minister said Mission Australia provided on-site case management, support and referrals at the Batten Rd homeless facility, and other support services included drop-in dignity services, vulnerability and needs assessments, tenancy readiness programs, and financial counselling.

“The establishment of a courtesy bus will allow us to link people up with specialist services, like Batten Rd quicker and easier,” Ms Fyles said. “It will mean that individuals sleeping rough will be able to access wrap-around services and get the support they need.

“Extending the foreshore patrol links up with the multiple patrols we have running across the Territory, and allows for positive engagement throughout our communities”
