A 16-year-old boy who crashed a stolen car in the northern suburbs early Tuesday morning, left two people behind in the car when he fled police, including an 11-year-old boy and 32-year-old woman who needed medical treatment, NT Police said, with all three arrested along with three others after a wild night of stolen vehicles across Darwin.
Police said the first stolen car of the night was a Toyota Rav 4 reported around 11pm in Larrakeyah, which was later found crashed into a tree on the corner of Mitchell and Briggs Street in the CBD around 3:15am, with one occupant seen fleeing the scene.
Around 11:40pm, police received reports of a silver Landcruiser and a grey Audi doing burnouts in the Bagot Community, with both cars identified as being stolen following two home break-ins in Ludmilla and Cullen Bay.
The Landcruiser was later abandoned in Bagot, NT Police said, while the Audi was pursued through the Dawrin CBD by police, later being abandoned in Harriet Park.
“Police received further reports at 3:30am of a white Landcruiser Prado that was stolen after an unlawful entry in Larrakeyah. At 8:40am this vehicle was located by Strike Force Trident and Dog Operations Unit at a Service Station in Stuart Park with three males aged 30, 31 and 42 being taken into custody,” Detective Senior Sergeant Dale Motter-Barnard said.
Around 4:30am, police attempted to apprehend a grey Hilux in Karama that had been stolen from Malak, where a pursuit was initiated after the vehicle failed to stop.
It crashed on the corner of Vanderlin and Kalymnos Drive, where the driver left two people in the crashed car while attempting to flee the scene.
The driver, a 16-year-old, was arrested by the Dog Operations Unit a short distance away, police said, and was expected to be charged on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, one passenger, a 32-year-old woman, was taken to RDH where she was treated for an arm injury, while the 11-year-old did not suffer any injuries in the crash. He was dealt with “under provisions of the Youth Justice Act, while the woman was summonsed to appear in court at a later date.
Strike Force Trident is continuing its investigation and attempting to locate the offenders still outstanding.
Police will also be reviewing the circumstances around the pursuits to ensure their officers “responded appropriately”, Det Snr Sgt Motter-Barnard said.
“This was an incredibly complex incident for police to respond to and these offenders have put the community at risk of serious harm,” he said.
“We are confident our officers responded appropriately and in accordance with NTPF procedures, the circumstances of the pursuits will be reviewed.
“These offenders have no regard for the safety of those around them and the NTPF will do everything within our power to protect law-abiding Territorians.
“Police continue to seek information in relation to the incidents and if anyone has information or CCTV footage you are urged to make contact on 131 444 and reference P25067782.”
