A 43-year-old woman was killed early Friday morning after being struck by a vehicle while walking along the Stuart Highway, approximately 500 meters north of Virginia Road, NT Police said.
Police reported the incident occurred around 4am, and the driver stopped and reported the accident, remaining at the scene. The woman was declared deceased when paramedics arrived.
St John NT paramedics responding to the accident described the scene as “distressing”.
Police said there were delays on the Stuart Highway as the Major Crash Unit investigates the accident.
The incident raises the total number of fatalities on NT roads this year to 10, a decrease compared to the 20 reported at the same point in 2024.
Last year, the Territory recorded 60 fatalities on its roads, marking the highest death toll in a decade for the region. That number was almost double the 31 deaths reported the previous year.
