A fatal hit-and-run crash involving a cyclist in Nhulunbuy early Sunday morning is the focus of an NT Police investigation, with police calling for any witnesses to come forward.

Police reported receiving a report around 2am of a supposedly injured cyclist on Melville Bay Road, about 4 km from Nhulunbuy. Responding officers and paramedics discovered a deceased male upon arrival at the scene.

Major Crash Detectives later arrived at the location on Sunday to investigate the circumstances of the crash.

“Major Crash Detectives are investigating the crash and Melville Bay Road will remain closed while the investigation is ongoing,” police said in statement on Sunday.

“Anyone who may have information or witnessed vehicles travelling along Melville Bay Road between 1 am and 2 am is urged to contact police on 131 444, and quote reference number 10524555.”

The latest hit-and-run crash follows a series of hit-and-run road incidents in the NT in recent months.

In October, a 31-year-old motorcycle rider died after being hit by a vehicle in Howard Springs. This month another hit-and-run incident occurred involving a cyclist critically injured in Darwin. A man was also killed the following night after being hit by multiple vehicles 20 km south of Darwin.
