Excavator incident injures worker at new civic centre construction site

NT WorkSafe has issued a safety alert following an incident at the Darwin Civic Centre construction site, where an excavator bucket injured a 50-year-old worker last week, while the City and contractor DCOH said they are cooperating with authorities.

NT WorkSafe is investigating and said preliminary information suggested a 50-year-old worker was preparing to pressure-wash an excavator that had three unsecured smaller buckets on top of the main bucket. The excavator operator, not seeing the worker while moving the arm, stopped abruptly upon realising the worker’s presence. The sudden stop caused the main bucket to jerk, resulting in one of the smaller buckets falling and striking the worker on the arm.
