‘Erosion of trust’: Monaghan defends allowing Labor pollies to charge taxpayers for holidays, won’t reimburse taxpayers either

Former speaker Mark Monaghan should pay back taxpayers the thousands he secretly approved for two of his Labor colleagues to take holidays at taxpayer expense after an independent statutory body ruled that his decision to permit the use of government cars and fuel cards for personal interstate travel was inappropriate, an independent MLA says.

The Remuneration Tribunal – the body that sets NT politicians’ salaries and entitlements – ruled late last year that politicians could not use their government cars and fuel cards for personal travel interstate, overturning Mr Monaghan’s determination that Deputy Chief Minister Chansey Paech and acting Speaker Dheran Young could charge taxpayers for their interstate holidays during the Christmas holiday period in 2022.

  1. Easy to fix, show these thieving pricks the door at the next election.

  2. How about we call out Monahan for what he is – a lier and a fraud. He “inadvertently ” forgot to ask the remuneration tribunal for their opinion on the matter. AND he failed to inform all MP’s of his decision? ( I wonder why) He knew full well what the fallout would be, so he lied, and defrauded the people of the NT. And still he maintains he did nothing wrong. The NT Labor party, in fact the entire Labor party has no scruples when it comes to being accountable. Like a mob of hungry pigs with their snouts in the trough!

    • Yep, *Monaghan is a dead-set *liar.

      • SKUM….all of them🤢🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

  3. What’s new?? Feather their nest while they can and do as I say, not as I do. Trust me, I’m a politician.

  4. First class seats on the gravy train as long as they can.

    • These germs sent me to court for just doing my job and they constantly cross the line criminally and ethically with no consequences.

      • Well said. You were targeted unfairly.

  5. Great journalism. Sometimes even “Open & Transparent” governments needs a little help.
