Eight young people aged between 14 and 19 have been arrested and charged in connection to a series of break and enters and stolen cars around Katherine last week, NT Police said, and another six youths were referred for action under the Youth Justice Act.

Police recorded eight vehicles being stolen from four properties during break and enters and another five businesses were also reportedly broken into over four nights between June 8 and 11.

Eight of the alleged offenders were charged with a series of offences including being “armed with an offensive weapon”, aggravated unlawful use of a motor vehicle, unlawful entry, stealing trespassing and driving unlicenced.

But police said a further six youths “are to be dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act”.

“Detectives from Strike Force Cerberus are continuing to investigate these incidents and it is likely that there will be further offenders identified and prosecuted,” said Superintendent Craig Garland.

“There is no excuse for this type of offending in our community or anywhere, it’s unacceptable.”
