Driver involved in fatal crash with motorcycle tested positive for cannabis: Police

The motorist involved in a fatal collision with a motorcycle driver had consumed cannabis at some point before the incident, the NT Police have alleged in a statement.

The 54-year-old motorcyclist was killed around 7:45pm in the crash on Stuart Highway at Noonamah Tuesday night.

Police said all emergency crews responded to the incident but the man died at the scene of the crash.

“The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and is assisting police with inquiries,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner.

“The at-fault driver, a 47-year-old man, tested positive for cannabis and was arrested for the purpose of obtaining a blood sample at hospital. He’s since been released pending further investigation and forensic toxicological analysis.”

Major Crash detectives worked throught the night at the scene, interviewing witnesses and investigating the circumstances of the crash, Snr Sgt Lindner said.

Charges have not yet been laid and no court date set.
