Self-proclaimed ‘zoosadist’ and convicted dog rapist and killer Adam Britton’s sentencing submissions proceedings have been adjourned until May.
Britton, 52, pleaded guilty to 61 charges in September including bestiality, animal cruelty, and possessing child abuse material, having filmed the extreme torture and killing of 39 dogs he had mostly sourced from Gumtree, where in some instances he had convinced distressed owners who were moving interstate that their pets were going to a good home.
The details of his horrific torture and sexual abuse filled 31 pages of agreed facts, which also had another 40 pages detailing images and videos he had shared and conversations he had on end-to-end encrypted messaging app Telegram, where he bragged that the torture could go on for up to four days to maximise the pain to the animal.
There were 18 indictable charges Britton pleaded guilty to, made up of 10 counts of male sexual intercourse with an animal, four counts of using a carriage service to harass, one count of possessing child abuse material, two counts of using a carriage service for child abuse material, and one count of controlling child abuse material.
Britton also pled guilty to 43 summary animal cruelty charges, made up of 36 counts of aggravated cruelty to animals, four of committing an act of cruelty on an animal, and a final four counts of breaching a duty of care to animals over abuse of his own pet dogs Bolt and Ursa.
In the Supreme Court today, Chief Justice Michael Grant ordered submissions and sentencing proceedings to be adjourned until 10am on Friday, May 3, with the accused to be remanded in custody.
It was discussed in court that the prosecution had only just received further psychiatric reports from the defence into Britton’s state of mind and prospects for rehabilitation.
Sentencing submissions were originally scheduled for December 13.
The disgraced academic holds a PhD in zoology and was a Charles Darwin University senior research associate, and also owned a crocodile research and consulting business called Big Gecko. He also housed a crocodile at his rural property at McMinns Lagoon in Darwin’s rural area.

The agreed facts showed that between November 17, 2020 and April 22, 2022, Britton sourced 42 dogs of varying breeds and ages, mostly from Gumtree, that he later tortured and sexually exploited for his own sadistic sexual pleasure, intentionally killing at least 39 of those animals.
He used a Telegram account called “Monster” from 2020 to 2022 to engage in conversations with “like-minded people”, including zoophiles and zoosadists. From January 2022, he used another account to distribute his “material”. He referred to himself as a zoosadist in these conversations.
The agreed facts state that on March 23, 2022, an anonymous Gmail user referred a video titled ‘1Bitch9Pups’ to the Northern Territory Animal Welfare Branch. The 15-minute video had been posted on a publicly available gore website by an unknown user the day before, and consisted of multiple shorter videos recorded by Britton depicting him sexually exploiting, torturing and killing the previously referenced female dog and her eight puppies.
The person who reported it had noticed the dog was wearing a Darwin City Council ‘Great pets start with you’ orange lead.
Britton’s house was raided on April 22, 2022 after an investigation by the Northern Territory Police and Australian Federal Police from the Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team.
