The AAPA and CLC have been nothing but road blocks to industry for many years. They are a major cause of the current lack of investment in the Territory by holding up progress, changing the goal posts and forever demanding more and more money whilst giving nothing back. They are a large part of the reason “their people” have extremely limited job opportunities because if you keep “your people” in a state of disadvantage you can always play on the heart strings of the southern politicians for even bigger payouts from the taxpayer whilst simultaneously spruiking what a great job you are doing saving the Indigenous community They are a blight on the whole Territory community and need to be eliminated and power handed back to the TO’s on the ground. Then you will see lifestyle improvements on community
This is really disheartening to read, where is your humanity? It’s nice to point fingers or kick those that are down but true leadership comes from realistic solutions, realistic funding & realistic outcomes.
Leisa, my Humanity is exactly where it should be, on the side of the Indigenous community members that are living in poverty while their fat cat “leaders” are earning prime ministerial salaries and wasting billions of dollars paid for by the Australian people and taking no responsibility or accountability for their non achievements on the ground. There are areas where some good is being done but it is minuscule compared to the damage being done to generations of Indigenous people being brainwashed into thinking that it is the Government and non Indigenous peoples fault that they are living in poverty. The blame lies squarely with the way hard earned taxpayer dollars are being squandered by those in charge of it coupled to absolute resistance by the “leaders” to any opportunity on the ground in communities that will allow investors to come in and create work and wealth for those actually living there on their own terms not those of someone sitting in an office far from where it matters
I was on a community for 16 years, but never saw much real help coming either from the NLC or the CLP. The latter bent over backwards to shut down Bilingual Education which, the Whitlam government had brought in. It looks like nothing much has changed.
Come on Leisa, what have any of the many Aboriginal organisations really done to lift people out of poverty. Been watching it for 60+ years and despite billions being kicked in nothing of real note has changed. Keep them down and out and we have a job for life and our kids will too. Very sad really.
NLC, AAPA and CLC have not only been a road block to industry for many years but also to the indigenous people themselves. They too suffer the same ridiculous obstuctions when they want to do something on their own land.
If you understand the role of Land Councils in the NT, you would know that they are more like a broke government than a slush fund for executives. They have enormous responsibilities and do a great job informing Traditional Owners of their options and helping them manage their land in response to development (because they is the main work they are funded to do), but they are chronically under-resourced to do proactive work. And, yes, like all of us, they make some mistakes and they can’t please everyone all of the time. But they are truly representative organisations, probably less corrupt that our actual government, and their staff and councillors work bloody hard. If you have a gripe with Land Councils, take it up with the federal government who keeps them underfunded. They could be driving a lot more positive change if they were resourced.

If these people cared for the people that they supposedly represent, there would be respect for them, however respect is a two way street.
