A 12-year-old girl was taken to hospital after allegedly being assaulted by three adults, first on a bus and then again when she exited the bus at the Casuarina exchange on Sunday evening, NT Police said.

Police said the victim and her friend were travelling on bus number 4 from Parap to Casuarina around 6pm Sunday evening when the girl was approached by an adult female on the bus who allegedly physically assaulted her.

“The victim exited the bus at the exchange and another two adults became involved, allegedly assaulting her again before fleeing the scene,” said Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Andrew Kren.

The assault was stopped by transit security officers who came to the victim’s rescue before she was taken to hospital by family. Police said she suffered multiple cuts and bruises.

The three people fled the scene at the time and are being sought by police.

“This was a disgusting and cowardly act,” Snr Sgt Kren said.

“Police work in partnership with transit officers and will continue to do so in an effort to reduce incidents of violence and anti-social behaviour.”

Police did not provide a possible motivation for the attack.

“Serious Crime Squad are investigating the incident and are urging anyone with information to contact them on 131 444. Please quote reference number 10134271.”

The assault occurred on the same day bus drivers rallied at Parliament calling on the Fyles Government to immediately address the increasing levels of violence and anti-social behaviour across Darwin’s bus network to protect drivers and passengers.
