Declan Laverty’s funeral will be held on Friday, with the family opening up the invitation for Territorians to watch the livestream in recognition of the support they received from the community since his death.

His mother, Samara Laverty, said the family felt the overwhelming support from the Northern Territory community after Declan’s death, which resulted in thousands of Territorians attending an anti-crime protest outside Parliament House on Saturday, calling on the government to do more to improve community safety and stop someone else being killed at work.

Airport Tavern BWS employee Mr Laverty, 20, was stabbed and killed last Sunday night while at work, which police suspect was linked to another violent assault on Sunday night at the Beachfront Hotel bottle shop.

Keith Kerinauia, 19, appeared in Darwin Local Court last Tuesday charged with murder and breach of bail, where the court heard he was to appear on April 13 for a prior assault with a “bladed weapon”, which the prosecutor asked to be re-listed with the new charges.

Ms Laverty said Declan’s funeral will be held at 1:30pm Friday (1pm Darwin time), at the chapel of Heritage Brady Funeral Directors Crematorium in Gordonvale outside of Cairns, with a livestream of the funeral made available.

She said all family, relatives and friends of Declan were respectfully invited to attend his funeral service and are requested to wear black and yellow clothing, as these were Declan’s favourite colours.

Ms Laverty said the family felt the response they’ve received from the Northern Territory community meant that other people should be able to celebrate Declan’s life.
