Darwin’s Lions’ Beer Can Regatta will be held again on Sunday at Mindil Beach, culminating in the Battle of Mindil in the afternoon.
Event spokeswoman Delma Swan said the races between boats made out of cans, as well as plastic bottles and milk cartons, provided hours of entertainment, attracting thousands of locals and visitors to Mindil Beach each dry season.
Apart from the adult boat races culminating in the Battle of Mindil, visitors can see various events including junior boat races, the defence and hospitality challenges, tug-of-war and running races, men’s and women’s throng throwing competitions, a kayak race, a beach relay, the junior Battle of Mindil, and an iron person competition, as well as other events.
“Upcoming fashion designers can take part in ‘Fashions on the Beach’, where competitors will show off their outfits made out of cans or cartons,” Ms Swan said.
The beer can regatta began in 1974, and the event raises funds for different charities and not-for-profit organisations. This year’s regatta will support Care Flight and St John Ambulance
The regatta will be held this Sunday from 10am to 5pm with a gold coin entry fee.
