Darwin writer and director Kate Wyvill will have her first short film The Wardrobe showcased at the Flickerfest Film Festival in Sydney on Saturday.
The film was selected from over 3,200 entries to be one of 200 films to be shown and is the only Northern Territory film to be selected.
The film was written and directed by Ms Wyvill and produced by Sarah Price with 100 per cent of the film locally made with an all-Territory cast and crew.
“It is wonderful to have my first film selected but even more so that the film is totally local, everyone who worked on it lives in Darwin,” Wyvill said.
“To move from writing for stage to film has been a fascinating transition. I’m grateful to Screen Territory for the opportunity to attend the NIDA writing and directing courses earlier this year, they were invaluable.”
She said the film was based on her stage play of the same name that was originally staged at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and premiered earlier this year at the Darwin International Film Festival at Deckchair Cinema.
“Starring local actors, Kyle Walmsley and Sarah Reuben, The Wardrobe is a dark comedy about the endless juggle of raising young children alongside work pressures whilst also trying to keep a relationship sane and has resonated with local audiences,” a statement said.
Flickerfest starts in Bondi on January 20 and is in its 32nd year. It runs over ten days with short films from around the world. It then goes on an eight-month national tour of more than 50 metro and regional venues across all states.
Wyvill has been on the Darwin stage as an actor and as a playwright, director and producer, since the early 90s, with her stages plays also including Marble, And I’m the Queen of Sheba.
Producer Ms Price said she and Wyvill would be collaborating on a televisions series, Going Troppo, which would be based on The Wardrobe, and which will be set and filmed in Darwin and Sydney.
The Wardrobe screens at 4pm this Saturday at the Bondi Pavilion.
