Benjamin Glenn Hoffmann has pleaded guilty to killing four people during a shooting rampage across Darwin in June 2019.

Hoffmann, who was in the seventh week of a nine-week trial, reversed his previous not guilty plea Tuesday morning, pleading guilty to three counts of murder and guilty to one count of a reduced charge of manslaughter, among other charges.

Hoffmann was arrested and has remained in custody since the shooting rampage on June 4, 2019.

He has now pleaded guilty to killing Hassan Baydoun, Michael Sisois and Robert Courtney, as well as guilty to manslaughter in the death of Nigel Hellings.

He also pleaded guilty to four other charges including three counts of recklessly endangering life and one count of threatening to kill.

Crown prosecutor Lloyd Babb told the court he accepted the guilty pleas.

Justice John Burns discharged the jury and thanked them for their time.

“Well, as you see, members of the jury, we no longer have a trial. The accused has pleaded guilty to a number of charges, the Crown has accepted those pleas in full satisfaction of the indictment, so as I say, we no longer have a trial,” he said.

“I am going to discharge you now but before I do I want to thank you on behalf of the community for taking part in this trial.

“It has been a fairly long and difficult process but I hope you don’t think that your time has been wasted because we have only been able to get to the position that we are now because of what has occurred during the trial so again, I want to thank you on behalf of the community. Your part is now over and you are free to leave.”

A sentencing hearing commenced after the jury was discharged and continues tomorrow.
