Darwin not actually destroyed by Russian and Indonesian missiles: AFP fact check

A video posted on YouTube and Facebook claiming to show Darwin being destroyed by Indonesian and Russian missiles has unsurprisingly been found to be untrue by the Agence France-Presse.

The AFP Indonesian bureau reported that it fact checked the the eight-minute 14-second video, which the media outlet said showed at least three distinct clips, one appearing to be a large fireball in the sky, an explosion and other clips of soldiers in a military exercise.

“Thousands of flying missiles!! Attack from the Indonesian military and Russia has successfully destroyed the heart of the Australian city,” a YouTube video caption from December 24 states when translated from Bahasa Indonesian.

The video had been viewed more than 74,000 times by Monday.

AFP said it translated what the female narrator was saying from Indonesian into English, and found she was talking about supposed hostilities between Australia and Indonesia, that the conflict was heating up, and that Indonesian soldiers had been ordered to attack Australia from all directions.

“Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto said his party had launched missiles at the military target in Australia and would plan to attack from all directions, after accusing Australia of rejecting to talk,” AFP reported the narrator said.

“On Friday night local time, an explosion is reported to have lighted the strategic maritime area of Darwin in northern Australia,” the false report continued.

“Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese vowed to not surrender to Indonesia and its allies, let alone hand over the contested [island of] Pulau Pasir to Indonesia.”

AFP said it used verification tool InVID-WeVerify, and found none of the clips show a Darwin missile attack and that the video’s opening clip was shared in March 2022 by CNN Indonesia, UK-based video-licensing agency Newsflare, and The Daily Mail.

The report said a Google search found the narrator read an altered Indonesian news article about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with words substituted including “Australia” and Prabowo Subianto to make it appear as a story about Indonesia attacking Darwin.

It said the video clips used were taken from reports about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a fire in Moscow, and a military exercise in Lithuania.

AFP Fact Check is a France-based digital verification service with bureaus worldwide investigating and disproving false information and have previously debunked similar false posts about an ongoing armed conflict between Indonesia and Australia.
