The powerful magnitude-6.9 earthquake that rocked a remote part of eastern Indonesia was felt in the Northern Territory late Wednesday at around 11:25pm Darwin time, with reports buildings had swayed across the city.

According to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), the earthquake struck 620 kilometres north of Darwin, in the Banda Sea at a depth of 142 km. The epicenter was about 390 kilometers south of the city of Ambon in the archipelago’s Maluku province.

Indonesia, which is about 2,904 km away from the Northern Territory, is one of the most disaster-prone nations on Earth. In 2018, a magnitude 7.5 quake and a subsequent tsunami in Palu on Sulawesi island left more than 4,300 people dead or missing.

While frightening for Indonesians, no damage has been reported.

There was no tsunami threat or damages to the Australian mainland, islands or territories but Territorians were jolted by the quake with reports of buildings swaying and beds shaking.

Facebook lit up Wednesday night just before midnight with people sharing their stories of feeling vibrations that seemed to last many minutes and others saying the rumbling sound was alarming.

Residents across Fannie Bay, Bakewell, Malak, and Gunn posted on Facebook that they were feeling the tremor. Others just shrugged off the earthquake reports saying they didn’t feel anything.

The magnitude 6.6 earthquake recorded near Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory in 1988 is considered to be Australia’s largest ever according to Geoscience Australia.
