Darwin Fringe Festival kicks off Friday with eclectic lineup

The 2025 Darwin Fringe Festival will begin on Friday, July 11, running until Sunday, July 20, featuring more than 400 artists and over 80 events to be held across 24 venues in Darwin, with a focus still on local talent, organisers said.

The Top End’s most eclectic and vibrant arts celebration opening coincides with World Fringe Day, showcasing community cabarets, First Nations storytelling, immersive installations, youth showcases, experimental gigs, and thought-provoking new writing.

The festival marks 10 years of daring creativity, featuring top-notch emerging, experimental, and independent arts from the NT and beyond. Organisers said 70 per cent of its lineup showcases local talent, with the Darwin Fringe festival standing as the largest platform for homegrown creativity in the Territory, promoting innovative concepts through an artist-led format unique to fringe festivals worldwide.

“Supporting festivals like Darwin Fringe plays a vital role in strengthening the local arts sector while stimulating the tourism and hospitality industries, as audiences engage with Territory talent across a diverse range of city venues,” NT Major Events Company executive director Aimee Luxton said.

“This year’s program showcases the rich creative diversity of the Territory, where audiences can look forward to a wide array of performances, including theatre, music, cabaret, circus, visual arts, and spoken word, ensuring a delightful mix of surprises,” she added.

Organisers said the lineup offers something for everyone, whether you’re seeking fun for the whole family, a good laugh late at night, or a unique experience.

Darwin Fringe Festival director Hannah Illingworth said the event offers an opportunity for transformation, reflection and celebration, ensuring there’s something for everyone of all ages to enjoy.

“The local creative community is so – and I know we use this word a lot – vibrant! There’s so much going on, not only the art forms, but the things people are exploring, because the arts really are about storytelling. It’s about transforming your ideas or your understandings – sometimes cementing those ideas or understandings – and there’s a lot of this going on in Darwin,” Ms Illingworth said.

Average ticket prices for the events are $20 and over 10 per cent of shows are free. For tickets and to explore the whole program, visit darwinfringe.org.au.
