Travellers passing through the Darwin International Airport should brace themselves for delays as disruptions will be taking place due to the upgrading of the airport’s main tarmac, which could take another 18 months, or until early 2024.

DIA management said the runway works are essential to maintain the airport’s operability and will be carried out by Defence.

Airport management has advised airlines and passengers that the first airport closure will commence between 2.30 am and 10.30 am on Tuesday, October 25. Management said further similar closure times are anticipated.

The airport closures will inconvenience airlines and passengers, Airport Development Group executive general manager Rob Porter said.

“The airport’s main runway will close intermittently over the next 12 to 18 months to enable the completion of Defence’s planned runway works,” Mr Porter said.

“DIA apologises for any inconvenience as these closures will, unfortunately, impact flight schedules.”

He said airport management has consulted with airline partners, Defence and other stakeholders about the upgrade being timed at the end of peak tourist season to try and minimise negative impacts, and that management remains committed to providing a safe environment for all airport users.

The Department of Defence and the Territory’s Airport Development Group are jointly funding the works.

“Maintenance activities are planned to minimise the impact on airline and passenger movement however there may be occasions where flight schedules are impacted, particularly night flights,” Mr Porter said.
