A petition launched after the stabbing death of bottle shop worker Declan Laverty that has garnered nearly 26,000 signatures calling on the Fyles Government to take action on crime will be debated in Parliament next month, but the Opposition says the government needs to set a firm date and not gag debate.
The petition on change.org was started by Mr Laverty’s mother Samara Laverty shortly after her son was stabbed to death. It has seen a resurgence since last week, with 10,000 more people signing it in recent days.
Only 2 days ago someone was punched by a neighbour in his own place, rang police and waited. An hour later after another phone call to police he came back with a friend and bashed him. Went to hospital and waited 7 hours to see a doctor then admitted overnight. Went to police station to follow up and make a statement. Police not at fault for not attending, Hospital not at fault for long delays. The government needs to look at what its core responsibilities are.
