Two utility vehicles were stolen in a night of mayhem in Alice Springs and later used to steal five motorcycles from a business and carry out a home invasion, NT Police said, with both vehicles eventually ramming police cars and the teen occupants throwing rocks at police, with five youths eventually arrested.

Police received reports of the two utility vehicles being stolen from a residence on Price Street around 3:40am Monday morning, where they allege the vehicles travelled to a second house along the Stuart Highway where the group broke into the home and threated the occupants with an “edged weapon and a tyre iron”.

Police said the group fled the residence with a victim’s mobile phone, before travelling “in a convoy” to the business on Milner Road, Ciccone, where the vehicles were used to ram the business’s front doors, gaining entry. The group then loaded five motorcycles onto the back of the stolen utes before fleeing when police arrived.

“Police initiated a pursuit of both vehicles, during which one rammed a police unit head-on,” police media director Mark Wilton said in a statement.

“A tyre deflation device was successfully deployed and one of the stolen vehicles came to a halt. The 16-year-old female driver was arrested at the scene and the two other occupants fled into nearby bushland.”

Police media would not confirm if the car flipped upside down following the tyres being spiked.

“While officers were at the scene, the second stolen vehicle drove toward the officers and rammed their parked police unit,” Mr Wilton said. “The offenders then stopped and began throwing rocks at attending officers before driving away.

“No officers were injured during the incident.”

The alleged offenders were later spotted around 5:25am travelling along Kartne Road, where another pursuit was launched by police.

Four offenders, aged between 14 and 17, eventually abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee but were apprehended by police.

All five offenders are expected to face charges. Investigations are ongoing, police said.

“Police urge anyone who witnessed the incident or with information to make contact on 131 444,” Mr Wilton said. “Please quote reference number P25232826. Anonymous reports can be made through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
