Former CLP Barkly branch chair and party management committee member Greg Liebelt and his wife Rebecca have been committed to stand trial on charges of stealing more than $400,000 from Australia Post.
The pair have been charged with aggravated stealing and obtaining a benefit by deception. Ms Liebelt, who managed the Tennant Creek Post Office, has also been charged with money laundering.
The couple appeared in Alice Springs Local Court on Thursday via video link from Tennant Creek where they are on bail.
Prosecutor Greg Dooley told the court the money, $425,749.95 had been stolen from Australia Post and “channelled into 30 different bank accounts, 75 per cent of which were in joint names”.
Mr Dooley also told the court that telephone intercepts showed Mr Liebelt had some knowledge of the alleged crimes.
Judge Greg Borchers found there was enough evidence to commit the couple to stand trial in the Supreme Court.
An administrative hearing is scheduled for October 27 in Alice Springs.
Mr Liebelt resigned from his roles with the CLP earlier this year.
