The CLP has formed a “working group” to analyse the Northern Territory Treaty Commission’s final report, including the recommendation for the establishment of a First Nations government which would be independent of the NT Government, party president Shane Stone has said.
The newly elected president said in a statement that not all Territorians had been adequately informed about the recommendations contained in the 85-page report – which he said cost $50,000 per page to produce – but Chief Minister Natasha Fyles nevertheless recommitted to a treaty in an ABC radio interview on Tuesday.
Mr Stone said former CLP deputy chief minister and treasurer Barry Coulter would head the working group and that the establishment of an independent First Nations government, or governments, with responsibilities for planning and environmental matters should be a matter for all Territorians to be consulted so they fully understand what the likely impacts will be.
