China’s ambassador to Australia has warned that China “has an obligation to protect” Chinese companies’ interests overseas, indicating trade between the two nations “and that part of Australia” particularly will be affected if the Darwin Port is reclaimed by Australia, a day after the Prime Minister said commercial negotiations were continuing to overturn the 2015 lease by the NT Government that he said was not in Australia’s national interest.
Xiao Qian said at a press conference at the Chinese Embassy in Canberra on Wednesday that discussions had involved Canberra, Beijing and Landbridge Group since Federal Labor’s 2025 election pledge to take back control of the port.
l am not a fan of the Chinese but in this case they have a legal contract and they stumped up the money that the port needed to remain operational, l have had to go to the port many times for work and by Australian port standards it works quite well. Both the labor and LNP are blowing smoke up our arses.
