A child has reportedly been sexually assaulted in an East Arnhem Land home on Sunday, NT Police said, following reports of a separate sexual assault of a child in Alice Springs over the weekend.
Authorities confirmed they are investigating the case in East Arnhem but did not provide further information on the alleged offenders or in which community the sex assault occurred.
On Sunday at around 1:15pm, NT police said they received a report that a child under the age of 16 years old had been sexually assaulted at a residential property in East Arnhem Land.
Police said they will not provide more information on the case as the investigation is on-going.
“Investigations into the incident are ongoing and in the interest of protecting the victim’s privacy, no further information will be provided,” media manager Rob Cross said in a statement.
Police did not say if an arrest has been made or if suspects are in custody.
The latest reported sexual assault of a child follows another reported on Saturday evening in Alice Springs. It was not mentioned when that incident occurred or when police first became aware of the incident.
Police media manager Rob Cross said detectives from the Alice Springs Criminal Investigation branch “received a report of a child under the age of 16 years, sexually assaulted at a residential property in Alice Springs”.
Mr Cross did not say when the alleged assault took place and failed to report if any suspects had been arrested.
The NT Independent understands police are investigating the involvement of two men in the incident that involved a child.
NT Police did not say whether the alleged offenders are still at large.
The NT Police executive and media unit have come under continued criticism for failing to report sexual assaults in a timely manner, especially those involving children.
Independent Member for Araluen Robyn Lambley meanwhile criticized Police Minister Nicole Manison for the escalating crime in Alice Springs despite “a record spend on police.”
“A very bad weekend for crime in Alice Springs – 340 incidents of crime in a 72-hour period. That’s up by 20 per cent on a normal weekend,” Ms Lambley wrote on her social media page.
“Alice Springs has just experienced a horrendous weekend of crime. The Police need to be thanked for doing their best under extenuating circumstances,” she added.
“This week in Parliament I will be asking the Police Minister why it is, that despite a record spend on Police, crime is worse than ever.”
