Charles Darwin University will use genomics to conduct a study on biting midges, looking at their potential to transmit severe animal blood-borne diseases that could damage the Australian livestock industry, the university has said.

Research Institute for Northern Agriculture professor of tropical biosecurity Maxine Piggott said the organisation would be collaborating with the NT Industry, Tourism, and Trade Department to study exotic diseases resulting from an infection transmitted by midges to animals, through blood feeding.
