Territory prisoners will be given vocational education and training by Charles Darwin University under a $1.7 million annual agreement signed with the Lawler Government, a contract that was previously held but lost by the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Education in June last year.
Attorney-General and Justice Minister Chansey Paech said the new contract – with the potential for expansion by a further two years – was worth a total of $3.4 million that would expand the education and training courses for detainees at prisons in Darwin and Alice Springs despite the Corrections Department having failed to meet its prisoner education targets.
What will arts training give them? They need to learn skills to do housing maintenance skills that they can use in their communities. Heath and teaching are also useful.
