The popular Carols by Candlelight event has been relocated inside to the Darwin Convention Centre due to safety concerns over the potential for weakened trees at the botanic gardens amphitheatre outdoor venue, following Cyclone Fina, which is expected to significantly reduce attendance numbers.
The organisers’ announcement comes just days before the event, which was initially set to be held at its usual venue at the amphitheatre, which is able to host over 7,000 attendees, compared to the convention centre’s limit of 3,000.
The organisers stated on Facebook that they will still “rock your socks off” this year despite the location change, with performances including “the 50-strong choir, 18 soloists and the band of the 1st Brigade of the Australian Army Band”, with attendees encouraged to “to get there early to secure your bit of floor”.
Fireworks at the Darwin Waterfront will be held following the performance.
The NT News reported the NT Government made an offer to help evaluate and address any potentially problematic trees to ensure the event could proceed at the Amphitheatre, but the organisers reportedly declined it.
The statement from organisers said the changed venue was due to “event timelines and safety concerns”.
Gates at the new venue will open at 5:30 pm on Sunday, organisers said in a Facebook post, and the show will start at 6:30 pm, followed by fireworks at the Darwin Waterfront.
While picnic items were previously encouraged, it’s unclear if they will be allowed indoors, as external food and drinks, including eskies, are generally prohibited. Attendees may bring one sealed 600mL PET bottle of water.
Strollers and prams are not permitted in the auditorium. Designated areas for picnic rugs and chairs will be provided.
Admission is a cash donation benefiting Variety—the Children’s Charity NT, with limited reserved seating options available for purchase.
